How much will a 15 Yard Dumpster Hold?
The waste management service industry uses a number of nomenclatures and acronyms that can be confusing to individuals not into garbage collection. First, we need to take a look at how dumpsters are classified. This starts with the industry term know as cubic yards.
A 15 Yard dumpster holds just that, 15 cubic yards of material. A cubic yard is a unit of volume. One cubic yard is how much material you can fit in a space one yard wide by one yard deep by one yard high. Think of one cubic yard as a trash can 3′ x 3′ x 3′. Now put 10 of those 3′ trash cans together and you have the volume of a 10 yard dumpster.
Now lets plug the dimensions of our small dumpster into our equation. The dumpster measures 18′ x 8′ x 4′ (sizes may vary). Lets do our high school math and multiply these from left to right. You get 288 cubic ft. Now we must turn this cubic ft number into cubic yards. To do that you now have to divide the number from our first equation, 288 by 27. This gives you 10.6. The cubic yards of material our dumpster will hold. Now you are asking, where did that 27 come from? There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard.
Easy enough, right? Now all you have to do is practice.
